VENUS. an album recently released by girly! an old high school friend.

I chose to start this dive into appreciating the music I listen to with more depth with this album for 2 reasons.
First just because it’s recent and recency bias always gets me.
Second I wanted to highlight local artist in my area with these posts too. Show anyone that reads these a piece of my taste but also what my area has to offer too.
My first listen of this album felt like a blast from the past. Smacked right in the face with the vibes I was on back in high school a remembrance of who I used to be. Before I found peace in distortion and chaos.
This album comes in with at a comfortable 7 tracks running for 17min 27sec.
LOCALS
Our intro into this experience, I see this song in two parts. The first of the higher pitched voice, I see this as life both girly and the experience together speaking on the beauty of acting on ones creativity and the taste of the consequences that comes with that. Girly’s flow comes in to emphasize the individual that feels the experience, the highs, the lows, and those that get it. The locals.
COLD
I feel this song comes in two parts like the last. One of self appreciation and the other of welcoming comfort. The mix of the two coalesces into a picture of girly’s mind that is both self appreciative and comforting for himself above all else.
ANTIDOTE
This is the track I relate the most to. From how I’ve connected with this album so far in that it’s following the duality of creative expression. Opening up with how he can’t always be understood and how he had needed to keep his circle of friends tight.
The flow, rhymes, and cadence have stood out the most to me on here. At some points it feels as if he’s crunching these words down, breaking them apart and toying with them. All while the smooth beat continues to flow in the background. It forces you to hear the power in his expression.
H(U)E
A shift occurs. The beat and vocals blossom out like a new spring. Working with each other, the high notes like patters of rain on leaves. Pleasing to the ears, vocals pouring out with drips of vulnerability here and there as you’re brought further and further along the new spring that’s presented to you, ending with love.
HONESTLY
Another relatable track (nothing is EVER what it seems). A love note of a song. But to who? To a lover or to himself? I’ve needed to vent to both before. On my own creative journey I feel I’ve said all the things he’s said on this track to both in order to grow.
SCHEMIN’
What is the world of girly like. This song takes down the path of it. The reality that he has experienced provided to you by some smooth and sharp rhymes.
REALYFE
Off of pure sound alone I say this is my favorite song. But I feel that the lyrics are also real as fuck. With a healthy amount of self aggrandizing he speaks on the growth that has been needed to become the person he is now to live proudly following his creative passions. I get it,,
From seeing how this dude has grown over the years I say this project is a real accolade on what he’s made so far. Off the sound alone it’s pleasing and peaceful. The lyrical content I find relatable and stands to serve as a testament to the growth that has occurred to continue down this path of self expression. And the flows and rhymes. The most captivating part of this whole project. I found it all entertaining and engaging and I’m excited to see how it all grows.
Thinking about this dude girly has me reminisce about my high school days and how that friendship made me want something more for myself. I think at a time when I was so unsure of myself it burrowed the seeds of confidence I needed to become the person I am now.
